We upcycled waste TV boxes and designed an urban furniture for public spaces, the biggest common spaces where people can meet!
Inspired by product designer JOSÉ CARVALHO ARAÚJ’s shapeshifting home furniture design, we have created a public space furniture concept that offers an environmentally friendly and playful approach. We created two design modules at first. These two create a mini public space when they are attached to each other. With its simple movement mechanism, it can be transformed into a table, a lounge chair or a seating unit.
As Onaranlar Kulübü, we believe that any product we develop for public spaces should not only impact and inspire with its design, but also with its functionality and materials. Therefore, the Samsung TV boxes we used within the scope of the project also draw attention to the awareness of the principles of reuse and responsible production and consumption.
We did a lot of sketching and modeling work before the production process. At the point where we thought we were approaching the most accurate design solution, we immediately started the 3D modeling phase. Our biggest challenge in production was to achieve the most optimal result by using the bends of the cardboard boxes without any waste. Since robustness is as important as design and materials, we tried to use waste cardboards from the production process as supporting elements to modify the existing design in the most durable way possible.
The fact that the Samsung Eco-package project created a new and creative playground for everyone by reusing waste packaging and Onaranlar Club’s motivation to develop a dialog between the city and urbanites came together was both exciting and inspiring!
